COUNTDOWN #6: SEARCH
THE WEB!
The purpose of an Internet Web Search is to
find the latest information about a topic that interests you.
Many of you are familiar with Yahoo, because it is often featured
on Internet provider home pages. But there are many others! Here's
a chance to try out some different search engines.
Here's a couple of pointers before you start
searching:
- Be specific! For example, if you want information
on beagles, don't type in dogs.
- Use the + symbol to add to your search. Many
search engines will allow you to find pages that have all the
words you enter. For example, if you want to find information
on how to train your feisty beagle, you can type: +beagle +train
- Use the ñ symbol to narrow your search.
If your beagle is an older dog, you might type: beagle puppy
- Use quotation marks to expand your search.
If you type "beagle train" you may find articles that
talk about training dogs, including beagles. But be selective.
You might also find stories about beagles that ride on trains!
